Gail M. Thornton

Principal Investigator

Research Interest

Biomechanics:

Dr. Thornton’s research interests include the mechanical behaviours of knee ligaments and the mechanisms of damage accumulation in normal and healing ligaments. She is also investigating the mechanical mechanisms of tendon injury, particularly in the rotator cuff of the shoulder. As well, Dr. Thornton studies the effect of estrogen on ligament mechanical properties, especially following injury.

Current Position:

  • Associate Professor, Departments of Surgery and Civil Engineering, Faculty of Medicine and Schulich School of Engineering, University of Calgary

  • Post-Doctoral Fellow, University of Calgary (2000)
  • Doctor of Philosophy with specialization in Biomedical Engineering (Biomechanics), University of Calgary (2000)
  • Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1995)
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering with Distinction, University of Alberta (1993)
