Michael S Kallos

Principal Investigator

Research:

Stem Cell Bioprocess Engineering: focus is on the generation of clinically relevant numbers of stem cells and their differentiated progeny in controlled, reproducible processes for clinical and therapeutic purposes – the scale-up of stem cell production in bioreactors. Two main areas include 1) technology development for high-throughput bioprocess design and 2) protocol development for expansion of pluripotent stem cells and scalable controlled differentiation.

Current Position:

  • Associate Professor Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, Schulich School of Engineering, University of Calgary
  • Coordinator, Biomedical Engineering Graduate Program, University of Calgary
  • Associate Director (Graduate) – Center for Bioengineering Research and Education (CBRE), University of Calgary
  • Associate Director – Pharmaceutical Production Research Facility (PPRF), University of Calgary
  • Principal Investigator, Canadian Stem Cell Network

Academic History:

  • Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering (Biomedical Engineering) University of Calgary (1995-1999)
  • BSc, Chemical Engineering, University of Calgary (1991-1995)

Publications

  • PhD Dissertation: The development of bioreactor protocols for the large-scale expansion of mammalian neural stem cells in suspension bioreactors, University of Calgary, 1999.
